when did we first hold hands?
was it that time we ran outta the playground
to compare the rocks we found
at the edge of the woods
was it on the way back to your place
after coffee went way-longer
than we expected
maybe it was the walk through the cemetery
overlooking the creek in the fall
you whispered, we could do worse
or was it
when we first came down from the trees
and startled by the saber-tooth
I grabbed your hand to pull you to safety
A love poem, Dawinian in scope? You’ve done beautifully with this
Actually not a love poem. Just written in that form. It came about this morning because I was on my way to the grocery store, and I saw a young couple holding hands walking down the street. I wondered how the fuck did humans start doing that….
It’s great actually, and yeah while maybe not personal, it’s still a love poem 🙂
Thanks, I appreciate it. I don’t really end up anything I write. Not sure how I’ll feel about this in a bit, but I do like the narrative of a complex relationship in just 63 words. It seems that they are very close, but that the intimacy is limited for much of it. And I must admit I love the line whispered in a cemetery, we could do worse. God damn near my love language there (even if I had to write it myself)
